Light
Tilt the stick into a flame for two seconds, then blow it out. What remains is not fire — it is a single ember, the size of a grain of rice.
Place
Stand it in the holder and step back. The first minute is the top note; do not judge the incense by it.
Listen
In Japan one does not "smell" fine incense — one listens to it (聞香, monkō). Sit within two meters. Let it finish.
